What Exactly Is Lost-Wax Casting?

Lost-wax casting (also called investment casting or cire perdue) is a process that creates a metal object from an original wax model. The steps are:

  1. A precise wax model is created.
  2. The wax model is surrounded by a heat-resistant mold material.
  3. The mold is heated so the wax melts and completely drains away (the wax is “lost”).
  4. Molten metal is poured into the empty cavity.
  5. Once cooled, the mold is broken and the metal piece is revealed for final hand finishing.

Because the metal takes the exact shape of the vanished wax model, this technique can reproduce extremely fine details that other methods struggle to achieve.

How Kensho Applies Lost-Wax Casting

Here is the real workflow inside our workshop:

Step 1: From 3D File to Wax Model After the 3D design is finalized from the customer’s dental impression, we create an accurate wax model. This model captures every detail — wall thickness, engravings, tribal or gothic patterns, stone seats, and the exact contour that follows the gum line.

Step 2: Building the Heat-Resistant Mold The wax model is invested in a special refractory material. It is then heated to a high temperature so the wax fully melts and flows out, leaving a perfect hollow cavity.

Step 3: Casting the Metal Molten metal (925 silver or 10K–18K gold) is poured into the mold under controlled conditions. This allows the metal to fill even the smallest and most intricate areas.

Step 4: Breaking the Mold and Hand Finishing After cooling, the mold is carefully broken away. The rough casting is then filed, adjusted, polished, and stone-set entirely by hand.
